TANGO Network – Research Task 3.5

Task 3.5 – Numerical and experimental study of domestic burner with heat exchanger

Supervisor: Dr Joan Teerling,
Host: Bekaert Combustion Technology, Assen, Netherlands.

The heat exchanger theme will be taken a step further in task 3.5 of the TANGO Network, where a rotationally symmetric setup, typical for domestic boilers, will be considered. Preliminary observations at BEK have shown that the presence of the heat exchanger affects the flame shapes. This effect will be explored quantitatively by measuring the flame transfer function with and without heat exchanger. A numerical model will then be developed, and this will be used to derive design rules for an optimised domestic boiler. The possibility of suppressing a combustion instability by adding a liner with micro-perforations (studied in task 3.2) will also be explored. There will thus be close interaction between tasks 3.2 and 3.5; this task will also benefit from the insight gained in tasks 3.3 and 3.4 of the TANGO Network.
